COMPANY PROFILE

PubMatic

Headquarters: Redwood City, United States · Founded: 2006 · Listed: NASDAQ: PUBM

What it does and how it makes money

PubMatic sells sell-side programmatic advertising software: it connects publishers of websites, apps and video with ad buyers, data providers and commerce media networks through automated real-time auctions.

It charges fees to publishers, generally a percentage of the value of the ad impressions they monetize on its platform. [1]

What data it collects about you

According to its platform privacy policy, it collects pseudonymous data about people who see ads: browser and device identifiers, IP address, location, browsing and ad-interaction history, and data from partners. It uses this to serve and personalize ads, cap how often an ad is shown, measure campaigns and prevent fraud. [2]

How it turns your data into money

PubMatic is a sell-side platform (SSP): it charges publishers a percentage of the value of the advertising impressions it monetizes for them. According to its platform privacy policy, when a publisher has ad inventory available it sends media buyers a 'bid request' with information about you: a cookie ID PubMatic assigned to your browser, your mobile advertising ID, your IP address and the approximate location derived from it (and precise location when it obtains it), the publisher's apps active on your device, your web browsing history from advertising impressions, and whether you interacted with the ad or how many times you saw it. It uses this to inform bid decisions, help create groupings of users by attributes, cap ad repetition, give buyers reports on when and how you were exposed to their ads, and disclose cookie values to other ad-tech platforms. Its own examples: buyers may deliver ads on a tablet based on activities you engaged in on your smartphone, and if you use a travel app you may see travel-related ads on other, unrelated apps. It keeps pseudonymous identifiers for 20 days, the browsing history linked to them for 120 days and audience segments for 90 days. [2]

Competition and monopoly

PubMatic has not been the subject of a competition finding but a plaintiff: on September 8, 2025 it filed a lawsuit against Google in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, seeking damages and injunctive relief over anticompetitive conduct in the publisher ad server and ad exchange markets for open-web display; according to its FY2025 10-K the case is in its early stages. It relies on the April 2025 ruling in the US Department of Justice case against Google, which found that Google willfully engaged in a series of anticompetitive acts to acquire and maintain monopoly power in those markets.
