What it does and how it makes money

An advertising platform that places ads and content recommendations on publisher websites and apps, connecting advertisers with their readers; it also runs the Taboola News app and the DeeperDive AI answer engine.

Advertisers pay it when people click, buy or, in some cases, view their ads on partner sites, and it shares part of that revenue with those sites. [1]

What data it collects about you

It collects pseudonymous data on visitors to partner sites: cookie IDs, IP addresses, mobile advertising IDs, browsing history within its network and sometimes hashed emails, plus device data and general location (city/state); it uses them to personalise ads, recognise devices across sessions and build data segments for its clients. [2]

How it turns your data into money

Taboola powers the 'recommended content' and native ad blocks at the bottom of news articles; because publishers embed its code on their pages, it can set its own first-party cookie. According to its privacy policy, it automatically collects digital identifiers such as cookie IDs, IP addresses and mobile advertising IDs, the pages you access within its customers' websites and your interactions with ads; it says it processes only pseudonymized data and keeps it for at most 13 months from your last interaction. With this it tailors what it shows you, identifies unique users across devices and serves ads based on your recent browsing across different sites in its network; it shares identifiers with data partners and with its programmatic demand and supply partners so advertisers can target audience segments, and gives publishers viewing and click-through reports. Its own example: if a user visits a clothing retail site, she might see clothing-related ads on another site. It earns money when people click on, purchase from or view the ads (charging per click or per thousand impressions) and shares that revenue with the sites that display them. [2]

Where it is incorporated

Taboola.com Ltd. is a company incorporated in Israel (its 10-K describes it as the group's Israeli parent corporate entity) with principal executive offices at 16 Madison Square West, New York. It has traded on the Nasdaq Global Select Market (TBLA) since June 30, 2021, after merging with the SPAC ION Acquisition Corp. It was founded in Israel in 2007 by Adam Singolda. [1]

Competition and monopoly

In 2020 the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) investigated Taboola's proposed purchase of Outbrain: at Phase 1 (June 2020) it found that UK publishers would have a reduced choice of supplier for content recommendation services, which could lead to worse terms and lower advertising revenue, and opened a Phase 2 investigation. On September 14, 2020 Taboola announced it was abandoning the deal and the CMA said it would cancel its investigation. [3]
