COMPANY PROFILE
The Trade Desk
Headquarters: Ventura (California), United States · Founded: 2009 · Listed: NASDAQ: TTD
What it does and how it makes money
A demand-side platform (DSP) that lets advertisers and agencies plan, buy and measure digital ads across websites, apps, audio, connected TV and video.
It charges clients a platform fee based on a share of their ad spend, plus fees for data and value-added services. [1]
What data it collects about you
It uses pseudonymous identifiers (cookies such as TDID, mobile advertising IDs, hashed emails and phone numbers via UID2/EUID), IP address and location, device data, browsing and app history seen in ad auctions, content watched on connected TV, and interests inferred or supplied by clients and partners. [2]
How it turns your data into money
The Trade Desk sells nothing to the public: it is the platform advertisers and agencies use to buy ads in automated auctions, and it charges a platform fee based on a percentage of the ad spend flowing through it. According to its privacy policy, when an ad loads it collects pseudonymous data: its own cookie (TDID), which recognizes your browser for one year from the last ad, mobile advertising identifiers, your IP address (to locate you) and the web browsing history it sees through ad impressions; it also uses hashed email addresses turned into the Unified ID 2.0 identifier. With this it creates user profiles tied to pseudonymous identifiers, builds graphs linking the identifiers on a single device, and measures how ads perform. Its own example: a clothing advertiser might see that someone who saw an ad for gloves subsequently purchased the gloves. It keeps pseudonymous data for up to 18 months and then, aggregated, for up to 3 more years; it discloses identifier mappings to clients and partners and cookie values to other ad-tech platforms. [2]
Where it is incorporated
The Trade Desk, Inc. is a Nasdaq-listed company (TTD) headquartered at 42 N. Chestnut Street, Ventura, California. It reincorporated from Delaware to Nevada; on November 6, 2024 a court found the conversion did not require supermajority stockholder approval, and its FY2025 10-K lists Nevada as its state of incorporation. [1]
Taxes and low-tax countries
Its FY2025 10-K subsidiaries exhibit lists 22 entities, including The Trade Desk (Singapore) PTE. LTD. (Singapore), The Trade Desk Limited (Hong Kong), The Trade Desk FZ LLC (United Arab Emirates) and subsidiaries in the UK, Germany, France, Japan, India and other countries; no subsidiaries in Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Bermuda or the Cayman Islands are listed. Its Q2 2025 10-Q states that its effective tax rate differed from the 21% federal statutory rate primarily due to nondeductible stock-based compensation and state and foreign taxes, partly offset by R&D tax credits.
